King of the Blues: The Rise and Reign of B.B. King Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JL PopulistTop Contributor: Guitars -- Addicted To The Road : This book is impressive in two respects: First, it's very heavily researched with loads of references at the back of the book. Second, it's candid. The author contradicts the paternity claims that even Mr. King himself made early in his career. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anonymous Texas Reviewer -- De Vise is an excellent storyteller and really gives the flavor of BB King's life : Dan de Vise's book about BB King is the gold standard for books of this kind. De Vise's writing paints a vivid picture of BB King's life and music. I highly recommend this amazing book for gifts for music lovers and biography readers, as well as for people interested in history of the American south. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Brown -- The definitive BB King Biography : I first heard of the artist BB king as a young child in the weekly reader in grammar school around 1964. I had the first opportunity to see him at the Mississippi River Festival in 1974 or 75. My friends and I went to the box office a few minutes before the show and scored front row center tickets. The warm up band was Muddy Waters. I got to meet and shake hands with both Muddy and B.B. that night. B.B handed me a guitar pick. The first celebrity guitar pick in my collection. The double bill was one of the top 5 concerts I have attended. The worst concert I attended was also a B.B. King show. It was 40 years later. The book answered my question on why the 2014 concert was so bad. It also showed that Muddy and B.B. had a somewhat similar early life. It also explains why they were both so great but so different. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jamie McLeroy -- Superbly written history of the blues. : This book is not only about the blues, it is also a history of music in the modern era and of the social injustices of Jim Crow America. The author understands music theory, too, and explains technical details of BB's music. As I read along, I would ask Alexa things like, "Alexa, play top songs by Lonnie Patterson" and it worked great. This is one of the best books about musicians I've ever read. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bluesdaddy -- Excellent!! : BB is my favorite guitarist and favorite singer. I’ve listened to, read and watched just about everything about him and all of it is good to great (including his own autobiography). This book is very complete and a story very well told. It gives the entire life of BB King from poverty through 6 decades of amazing music, framed by American history and his impact on the music world through the generations. BB was beloved by so many and his musical legacy is his biggest gift. But this book gives you a complete story about the person he was. He was flawed like most of us but his humility and kindness is part of his legacy too. Bravo to the author and the care in which he took to tell BB’s story. He got it right and it’s a great read. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Dickson -- Masterful American Biogrpahy : The King of the Blues is a compelling and remarkable biography which not only details an important American musical figure but explorers the 20th century culture in which this African American life was embedded and intertwines BB with lives as far removed as Elvis Presley (who, according to the author “treated him like royalty” and always addressed him as “sir”) to Martin Luther King and Medgar Evers (true friendships which played out in private) ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from John H. Wells Jr. -- BB KIng : Enjoyed the life story of BB King his humble beginnings in Mississippi to his journey to developing his guitar skill and singing craft to become the King of Blues. The book illustrates the harsh reality of the music business, the exploitation of BB king for profit, unfair contracts, no ownership of masters, and the outright stealing of his music. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Susan Abrams -- Decent History of B.B. King : I thought this book provided a detailed and thorough account of B.B. King, it was tough wading through the obvious political beliefs of the writer. Would have appreciated more B.B. and less political commentary. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2021 )
